Meisner Technique Training
No, you aren’t crazy. The Repetition exercise is a very unusual activity. But when Sanford Meisner developed it back in the 1950’s he stumbled onto something brilliant. The repetition exercise is at the heart of the Meisner Technique Training
But how does the repetition exercise work? As you will learn in the Master Class, Sandy presents the activity in three stages. The first stage is to face your partner and make an obvious statement, such as, “You are wearing a blue shirt.” Your partner then simply repeats that statement back to you. Back and forth you both go with that one obvious statement until you both can’t take it any more and one of you explodes. The fascinating thing is… within seconds, behavior just starts pouring out of both of you when confronted with such one-dimensional dialogue, which makes this simple exchange an excellent way to drop self-consciousness and place your attention on what is happening outside your head. As explained in the Master Class, when we stop listening to the meaning of the words we are saying, we are able to respond directly to behavior, no matter what the dialogue, and this brings profound authenticity to your acting.
When we aren’t focused on if we are ‘doing well’ or if we are doing it ‘right’ or being brilliant we can shift into the kind of presence Ekhart Tolle talks about in his book, The Power Of Now. Meisner stumbled onto the very same universal truth way back in the day that Ekhart recently presented to the world in a new way.
Life happens in the present moment. You can’t think yourself into brilliance on stage. When you place your attention on the present moment… brilliance rushes up on you.
